Theatre Workshops - What are they?

Our Theatre Workshops are occasions where people of all ages and backgrounds can enjoy and develop the different skills involved in theatre. It’s about getting used to being ‘on stage’. It’s about creating illusions, collaborating with others, developing and honing skills, gaining confidence, using your body to represent meaning, pretending to be someone you’re not, letting your hair down, having fun... Especially the ‘fun’ bit!

Plays aren’t called ‘plays’ by accident. Theatre is playing. It can be light and amusing; it can be deadly serious.

At each session we start with some gentle physical warm ups and games. There’s often a lot of laughter and fun in drama games, but they all have their point and purpose too, and soon you’ll see how much good stagecraft comes form being really physically aware. The workshop is also about looking at extracts from plays and asking: how many different ways could this be produced? How can we take the words on a page and make them come alive? And we do all or some of this in each 2 hour session [with a nice interval for refreshments!].

Who are the Workshops for?

This is simple: anyone over the age of 18 who likes the idea of being on stage and fancies ‘doing a bit of drama!’ Our youngest attendees have been just 18; our eldest somewhere north of 80! There’s no particular requirement other than a willingness to join in.

What do you mean by ‘Stand Alone’ Workshops?

People lead very busy lives. They can’t always commit to a particular night or sequence of sessions. They just might want to drop in when time’s available. They didn’t want to feel that if they’ve missed a session there’d be no point in coming along to the next one. So each session is a ‘one off’. You can come to each or any of them. They’ll always be an enjoyable and purposeful experience.
